Want to know a big waste of time in business?
You see it everywhere around you.
It’s writing mission statements and company visions, it’s the dumbest possible things.
Not sure who invented it, must have been a bunch of middle managers sat around a table all excited thinking it’s perfect.
It doesn’t have to make any sense, no one is going to read it, no one is going to get inspired by it, there’s zero company missions that every inspired you if your being serious about it.
The company vision for the BBC is to become the most creative organisation in the world.
If you want to know if a company vision actually works, just look at the absolute state of the BBC right now.
Is everyone inspired by their company vision? No, it’s just something that got put on a piece of paper in a middle management meeting.
It probably took 2 weeks to write and cost one million pounds. And then they come up with ‘to be the most creative organisation in the world’.
I see it on company websites, even small companies like “our mission at Peter & Paul HVAC is to warn the world and create a safe and spacious environment for everyone”.
You read it and think: who made you think this was a good idea? Who actually sold you on this idea?
Anyway maybe re think the mission statement…
